Uganda has now joined Rwanda in opposing the publication of a UN that appears to implicate its military in atrocious killings of civilians
in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Uganda, an important US ally in the
war on terror, is threatening that the release of the document would “jeopardize
its commitment to regional peace missions”. Currently, Uganda contributes 4300
troops to war-torn Somalia.
The report which was leaked to the press towards the end of
August, details massacres committed in the DRC between 1993-2003.
The Ugandan Army (UPDF) along with their Rwandan
counterparts invaded the Congo in December 1996. The war ended with the
overthrowing of Zaire’s president, Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997. But Uganda as well
as Rwanda continued an unpopular decade long occupation of eastern Congo.
The report is set to be released on the 1st of
October this year.
